Chapter 18: The Port Dinner
"What uncle?" I said.
"Not by blood." Zoya signed and spoke at the same time, which she only did when she was scared.
"He's the oldest man in our family. He sat beside our father for thirty years."
"And now?"
"Now he wants my brother's chair. He's wanted it since the day we buried Papa."
She jabbed at the screen. "Matvei's berths are right next to Atwater's. If the uncle owns Atwater, his crews and my brother's share a dock. Every night."
I thought about Summer Street.
One man with a box cutter over a card game, and a floor that took me two hours on my knees.
"What happens then?" I asked.
"Then you get very rich," Zoya said, "cleaning floors."
I stood up so fast my takeout spilled.
"Where's the Seaport hotel?"
"Ten minutes." She was already pulling on her boots. "He'll go. He always goes."
"Who?"
She just looked at me.
I drove the van. Zoya held my phone and watched the video again and again, reading the uncle's lips.
"He's telling them Matvei has gone soft," she said. "That a man who lets a maid tell him no can't hold a waterfront."
