Chapter 23: The Cellar Key
I went the next night.
Zoya drove the van, because she wouldn't let me go alone.
Before we left I texted Matvei. No more secrets. That rule went both ways.
Lindsey called. Going to Milton with Zoya. Don't come. I'll call you after.
He wrote back.
Careful.
Zoya parked outside the iron gates at nine on Sunday night.
ATWATER, in black letters, with frost on every one.
"Ten minutes," she said out loud. "You text me every ten minutes. You miss one, I come in."
"She asked for me alone."
"She asked for a lot of things." Zoya held up her phone. "Ten."
My own phone was in one jacket pocket.
In the other, in its sandwich bag, was the cellar key I'd made from wax at fourteen.
My hand had taken it out of the can before I asked myself why.
The gates were open. So was the front door.
The foyer was dark. The marble had gone dull. Nobody had polished it since October.
"Lindsey?"
"Kitchen."
She was sitting at the kitchen table where I'd eaten standing up for twelve years.
