Chapter 28: Unpaid Help

"Mr. Chairman," Lindsey said. "I'd like to speak."

Parker turned around in his chair.

"Linds. Sit down. You're not well."

She didn't look at him.

She walked down the center aisle in her plain gray coat, past two hundred people, and stopped at the microphone where he'd stood.

Her hands were shaking. She held the stand with both of them.

"My name is Lindsey Atwater. I'm Parker's wife."

The chairman nodded slowly. "Go on."

"Eight days ago I told the police what happened the night the crane operator died. Then my husband's lawyer told me I'd be charged too, and I took it back. I said I was drunk."

She swallowed.

"I was drunk. I'm not now. I'm saying it again, here, so I can't take it back."

The hall was so quiet I could hear the radiators.

"That night my husband went down to the terminal with Kent Truscott. He said an old man needed a lesson in manners."

"I've signed a statement for the detective with every detail. For nine years I poured his drinks and kept his secrets, and I'm finished."
