Chapter 20: Not a Vote
Roz's POV
The night before the Pike, I slept in his bed.
It was the first time I had gone up to the third floor without being asked to.
I had told him to leave the study light on.
I climbed the stairs in the gray sweatshirt with my hair down and my feet bare.
The strip of paper was in my pocket.
He was standing at the window of the plain white room with his back to me and his hands in his pockets.
He turned when he heard me.
"It's tomorrow," I said.
"I know."
"Ask me now."
The room was very quiet.
The bay was black beyond the glass and a single light moved on it, a trawler going out.
He looked at me for a long moment, with the whole of his face open.
"No," Declan said.
"It's the night before. It's the last time you can."
"I know what night it is." He took his hands out of his pockets. "I made a promise in a kitchen. If I break it the night before, it's worth what I paid for it."
"I'm giving you the right," I said.
"And I'm giving it back." His voice was low. "It's yours, Roz. It was always yours. I've got no vote."
I crossed the room.
I put my hand flat on his chest, over his heart, and felt it kick against my palm.
"Not a vote," I said.
"No," he said.
"Say it," I said.
"Not a vote," Declan said. "Whatever you say tomorrow isn't a vote. It's yours."
"Good," I said.
I pushed him back toward the bed.
He went.
He sat on the edge of the white mattress and I stood over him and took off the sweatshirt, slowly, and dropped it.
