Chapter 15: The Quarry
Coll's POV
Hector Gow stood at the cattle grid in the dark with a bottle in his fist.
He was shouting his stepdaughter's name at a house full of sleeping people.
I took the bottle off him before he finished the third time.
"She said you were never to say it again," I said.
"I know what she said." He swayed. "I wanted to say it where she could hear."
"She heard."
He started to cry, and I let him, because I had no better to offer.
I stood in the glen road in my boots and trousers with Ishbel's scent still on my hands.
Forty minutes before, she had given me an order.
Do nothing about the lad until the ring.
I had not answered her.
I had let her take my silence for a yes, because it was easier than telling her no.
"I know a thing," Hector said, wiping his nose. "I'll trade it."
"I don't trade with you," I said.
"I carry venison to the Lorne canteen every August," Hector said. "There's huts behind the slate shed, and the lads in them wear red wool."
He wiped his mouth.
"One of them's got Peigi's chin."
I stood very still.
Peigi had sat across from me at that kitchen table for twelve years, and I had never once asked what the Book cost her.
I had signed her grandson over in April, between a bank letter and a seed order.
I had not read his name either.
"Show me the road," I said.
"I'll not go in there."
"No. You'll stand at the gate and hold the lamp."
He held the lamp.
It was an hour and a half in the Land Rover, with Hector white and silent beside me.
I told no one at the house.
If I woke her, she would come, and the Lorne men had laid hands on her once already.
The quarry was cut into the hill in grey terraces, and the floodlights on the shed had been left burning all night.
