Chapter 17: Heather
"Not until sixty-one," I said.
Coll lifted the blade away from my wrist without a word.
He kissed the stained wool where the steel had lain, and slid the knife back into its sheath.
"Sixty-one," he said, and that was the end of it.
For seven weeks I had tried to call the wolf, and it would not come.
On the twenty-eighth of December the frost came down hard and clear over Ardach, and Coll took me up the hill at dusk.
His ribs had long since healed.
Hector had spent those seven weeks in the bothy, with a bucket and orders from Peigi.
Peigi's grandson slept in her room and ate everything she put in front of him.
"Leave the bones," Coll said, at the top, by the small cairn. "Think of the smell."
"What smell?"
"Anything you want to run at."
He stood in the heather with his jacket off and his breath smoking, looking at me with his dark, serious eyes.
I had changed once, in terror, and not known how.
I wanted to do it on purpose, with him watching.
"Turn round," I said.
"No."
"No?"
"You'll not be shy of me," Coll said. "I've seen the grey one."
I unbuttoned my coat and dropped it in the heather.
I took off everything else, with the wind lifting the hair on my arms, and stood bare on the hill.
He did not look away.
His eyes went over me from my feet to my face, and the hunger in them was open and steady.
"Now," he said.
I thought of the peat smoke from the house and the hare I had smelled in the bracken.
