Chapter 19: Tomnahurich
The plough had been through the glen road at seven, and Coll had me in Inverness by ten.
Tomnahurich cemetery climbs a wooded hill above the canal, with the paths cut in zigzags between the stones.
The snow lay a hand deep on the graves.
I knew the way without looking, and I walked ahead of him up the third path, with my plait down inside my collar.
My mother's stone was small and grey, near the wall.
Someone had swept the snow off the face of it.
I knew who, because Hector came every year on her birthday.
It said: Morag Gow, beloved wife of Hector, mother of Ishbel.
Coll stopped a yard behind me.
He took off his cap.
His hair was dark with melting snow.
He stood bareheaded in the cold and read the stone slowly, to the end.
"I came to say it to her," he said.
"Then say it."
"Mrs Gow."
He stopped, and began again.
"Morag Macrae. I'm Coll, Alasdair's son. I signed the paper that kept you out of your own hill."
