Chapter 19: The Foundation Dinner
The ballroom on the top floor of the harbor tower held four hundred people and nine hundred candles.
I sat at table one in a dark blue dress with the locket outside my collar.
At six forty my phone lit up in my lap.
"Voted out, five to two," Cullen had written. "Coming now."
I put the phone face down.
At table two, three seats from a silver-haired man with a hard jaw, an empty chair waited with a name card.
The silver-haired man was the board chair.
He held a glass of water and looked at the ceiling as though he had been told to enjoy himself.
My mother stood at the entrance, in gray silk, with her hands knotted together.
The nurse came through the door first.
Behind her walked a small woman in a blue dress.
She was fifty, with gray in her hair, and she held her purse in front of her.
Four hundred conversations dropped one table at a time.
I had seen a photograph of her once, crouched in the grass, tying a child's shoe.
I had not remembered her face.
I remembered it now, all at once.
My mother crossed the floor.
She walked the whole length of the ballroom, past the cameras and the donors, and stopped one pace from the woman in blue.
