I woke him, because I would not listen to it alone.
He sat up in the dark, and I pressed play with my thumb.
The voice was higher than mine and thinner, and it was trying hard to sound brave.
"It's me," it said. "It's Saturday afternoon, and I'm setting this to land a week after the party."
"By then I'll either have done it or run."
"Whitney is having Preston's baby. I'm telling him tonight, after the toasts, in front of his mother."
"If I lose my nerve, whoever hears this should be braver than me."
There was a breath, and a small, wet laugh.
"Dad left a last letter. Margot locked it in the safe in his study. I heard her say so on the phone."
"Whitney knows where the key hides. Please read it for me. I never got to."
The memo ended.
Denton's hand closed around mine so hard it ached.
"She did try," he said roughly. "She was going to stand up."
"She didn't get the chance to," I said. "I did."
