Chapter 19: The Cut Line

I took my hand back from the rope.

"What is it?"

Huck turned the line over in his fingers.

There was a strip of red electrical tape around it, the same red as the rope.

You'd never see it from three feet away.

He picked at the end with his thumbnail and peeled it back.

Under the tape, the sheath had been slit open.

The white core inside was cut through, all but a few strands, in a clean slant.

"That's not wear," he said. "Wear looks like a frayed shoelace. That's a blade."

I looked at the water.

Four feet out, this was the part of the line that would sit in the hardest current, with my whole weight swinging on it.

Below that current was the falls.

"Hey!" I yelled. "Safety! Over here, now!"

Every head on the gravel bar turned.

The show's safety officer came at a jog, a gray-bearded man in a river-ranger jacket with a radio on his chest.

Kip came behind him, slower, with his coffee.

"Nobody crosses," I said. "Not one team. Not till every line's been checked by hand."
