Chapter 36: The Pool House

After the Lincoln pulled away, nobody said a word.

Abram stood in the great room with the lab envelope in his hand for five minutes.

Then he set it down on the coffee table, very carefully, and walked out through the patio door.

"Abram," Breck said.

"Let him," I said. "I'll go."

Rand picked up the monitor and put it in my hand.

"Take this," he said. "Rule seven. She's asleep, and she's on the screen."

The pool lights were on, and the water was perfectly still.

Abram sat on the edge with his shoes off and his pants rolled to his knees and his feet in the water.

It was where I'd sat on my birthday, with a phone in my wet hand, when everyone had left.

I sat down beside him and put my feet in too.

"Not mine," he said.

"I know."

"Not by blood. Not ever." His voice was flat.

"I signed a sworn statement on a state form, and my mother had it tested."

"Now there's a piece of paper in my house that says I lied."

"You didn't know."

"I knew I didn't know." He stared at the water. "I told you I'd never go alone again. I'd broken it by Monday."
