Chapter 43: Rule Eight

On Saturday evening I put my copper member card on the kitchen table and turned it over.

Rule seven was already on the back, in my handwriting, with four signatures and one elbow.

Under it, I wrote rule eight.

Hers is ours.

Rand set a stapled document next to the card, and Breck leaned over it with a pencil behind his ear.

"It's called a nomination," Rand said. "It isn't a magic spell. It names who raises Hazel if Codi can't, and who looks after her money. Three guardians. Three trustees. All the same powers."

"All three of us," Breck said.

"All three. Your names, in the order of the alphabet, so nobody can say I ranked you."

"What about Codi?"

"She's her mother." Rand pushed his glasses up. "That doesn't need a paper. This is for the day a judge asks what happens if she isn't there."

"You did this in a week," I said.

"I did this in a night. I spent the rest of the week hiding from you."

Abram picked up the pen first and then put it down again.

"I'd like to say why," he said. "Out loud. Before I sign."

"Go ahead," I said.

"I wanted to be the name on the line," he said. "I thought it was how you protected someone. By being the only one." He looked at the paper. "I'd rather be one of four."
