The courthouse hall was cool and loud with forty people trying to whisper.
Dorothea waited by the same water fountain, with her handbag on her wrist and her chin up.
Abram stopped a little way off.
"Stay," he said, without turning.
He said it to the three of us.
"All of you. I'd like you to hear this."
"I'm not asking you to forgive me," Dorothea said.
"Good."
"I'm asking to say a few things, once, and not in a courtroom."
He nodded.
Rand moved half a step in front of me, and I moved him back.
Dorothea lowered her eyes, and when she lifted them again they were wet.
I believed it, which was the worst part. I think she did too.
"You left at twenty-two," she said. "You said you'd come back for Christmas, and then it was a year, and then your father was ill."
"I came to the hospital."
"For two days." She said it without heat. "Your father talked about that bank every night of our marriage. He kept the vault key in his pocket for fifty years. And at his funeral, you stood at the grave and told me you meant to make it a room for strangers."
