Chapter 4: Are You Married
The Monterrey Business Club gave its Man of the Year award in a ballroom with four hundred seats and a camera on every aisle.
Valeria walked in at noon on Tuesday on her sister's arm, wearing the navy dress she kept for funerals.
Her name was still on the foundation's guest list.
Nobody had thought to take it off.
"I look like I'm here to arrest someone," Fabiola whispered.
"You work for the courts. You are."
"I'm a clerk. I stamp things."
"Stamp this."
They took two seats on the aisle, six rows back.
On the stage, Rodrigo sat at a long table with a glass of water he had not touched.
In the front row, Aurora sat in gray silk with her hands folded.
Beside her, in a loose dress that hid very little now, sat Brenda.
She had not brought her bag.
She looked down at her knees the whole time the speeches ran.
The president of the club read out the list of Rodrigo's honors.
Three new steel plants, forty thousand jobs, a port expansion that had added a month of work to every dock.
The room applauded.
Rodrigo stood, thanked the club in a voice that did not carry, and sat down again.
"And now," the president said, "a few questions from our members."
A young journalist from the business paper asked about the port.
A banker asked about interest rates.
A woman in the third row asked about the new foundation scholarships, and Aurora smiled and nodded and spoke for four minutes about the children she had helped.
A boy with a microphone on a long pole walked the aisle looking for the next hand.
