Chapter 9: Two Weeks

Ridgely Home Care is on the second floor of a narrow brick building on West Street, above a shop that sells nautical flags.

I took the stairs one at a time with Stella in the carrier on my chest.

Hattie had wanted to come.

I had told her this one was mine to do alone.

Emmett Ridgely opened the office door before I knocked.

"You shouldn't have climbed all of that," he said.

"I have a doctor's note. It says I can."

"That isn't what I meant."

"I know what you meant."

His office was small and neat, with a gray desk, a filing cabinet, and a framed nursing license on the wall over the radiator.

The license was old and the name on it was Ridgely.

"My mother's," he said. "She started this place with two nurses and a borrowed phone."

I sat down in the chair across from him and did not take my coat off.

"I need to say something before we do anything else," I said.

"All right."

"You took his money."

Emmett did not look away.

"A cashier's check from a family you'd never met, to put a woman in my house, and you told your front desk not to send me her file." My voice was shaking, and I let it. "You were paid to let me be lied to."

"Yes," he said.

I had expected an excuse.

"The agency was three months behind on the lease," he said. "The check cleared it. I told myself that a husband paying for his wife's night nurse was an ordinary thing. I told myself it was a small favor."
