Chapter 15: Brant's Writ
Brant drew up the writ before breakfast and read it to the column in the cart shed.
The walls gave his voice somewhere to go.
All thirty-two soldiers stood in two lines on the straw.
The voiceless goose stood at the end of the second line, and nobody had put it there.
Naho sat on the tailgate with Gerta and Sella and a bowl of porridge she was eating for professional reasons.
Alric stood apart, holding the stump of Dawnbrand, which he had not found anywhere to put down.
The writ was a single sheet sealed in red wax.
Brant held it at arm's length, as he held anything he wished to be believed.
"By the Calling Statute," he read, "all gifts, goods, gear and tokens accruing to the Spare during the Chosen's undertaking are Crown property."
He lowered the sheet and looked at Naho over the top of it.
"That includes the rope, the spoon, the lace, and anything else she has been in the habit of improving."
"May I see it?" said Naho.
