Chapter 16: Door to Door

Alric rehearsed the greeting in the cart shed, with Sella as the door.

She stood in front of him holding a plank, which was the most convincing door she could find.

"Citizen," said Alric, one hand on his chest. "The Chosen of Aldermarch stands upon your threshold and asks for your hand."

"My hand's busy," said Sella, through the plank.

"It is the hand of the Weir that I ask," said Alric.

"Which one?" said Sella.

"Any."

"That's not an ask," said Sella. "That's a lottery."

Naho sat on the tailgate and let him have it.

The terms said she led, and a good lead lets a plan fail while failing is cheap.

The Bellkeeper's book lay open on her knee at the page that said no hand may be bidden.

She had read it six times, and on the sixth she had underlined the word bidden with her pencil.

"Is anything wrong with the greeting?" asked Alric.

"It has a verb in it," said Naho.

"It has several," said Alric.

"Only one matters. A champion on a doorstep who asks is bidding with a hat on."
