Chapter 17: What the Weir Has
By the next morning the Weir had begun leaving things on the step of the cart shed, and nobody would say who.
The first was a jar of pickled beets.
Naho found it at dawn beside a scrap of slate that said NOT FOR RINGING, pressed hard enough to dent the stone.
"It's a gift," she said to Gerta, "or it's a bribe with good manners."
"Does it matter which?" asked Gerta.
"It's the whole question," said Naho. "If it's payment for the ringing, I can't handsel it, and the hand is bidden."
"Ask the jar," said Gerta.
The Bellkeeper came out of the low room just then with his book and his loud cheerful voice, and looked at the beets.
"Soup," he said, with approval.
Naho did not ask the jar.
She waited at the step until the owner arrived, which took a while, because the cooper's wife had been hiding behind the water butt.
"Not for the ringing," said the cooper's wife firmly, before anyone had asked. "My husband won't, the old fool, but I made too many."
