Chapter 22: The Seat
Suzette looked at the chair, and then at me.
"Jonas," she whispered. "I don't want it."
"I know."
"Then why?"
"Because it's the only thing in this room I can give you, and everyone here is watching me do it."
The oldest captain shoved back from the table, red in the face.
"A woman in the chair?" he said. "She's a court clerk. She's not even a Wetherill."
"She's holding the book that hangs every man here," Preston's father said. "I'd like to see you tell her to put it down."
Nobody spoke.
"The rule says the chair brings the thief," Preston's father went on.
"Your heir brought nothing. He gave the thief his chair.
"That isn't in the rule, so we can't say it's against it."
He looked at my grandfather.
"Amos. Trial ten. Did he pass it?"
Amos hadn't moved from his seat at the far end.
He looked at me for a long moment, and I couldn't read him.
"He passed it," my grandfather said. "He passed it better than I did."
The captains murmured.
Suzette took one step, then another, and sat down in the chair at the head of the Wetherill table.
