Chapter 21: On Her Knees
The line behind me stopped without anyone telling it to.
Four hundred mourners stood on the cemetery path, and the only sound was the hearse engine ticking as it cooled.
Shelby stepped out from the railings.
Her coat was the same cream wool, now grey at the hem, and she had no makeup on.
She walked to the middle of the path, where everyone could see her, and went down on her knees on the wet gravel.
Somebody in the crowd drew a breath.
"I came to pay," she said.
Her voice was thin, but it reached the back.
"I'm not asking you to take me back."
"Good," I said.
"I'm not asking you for anything."
She opened a small cloth bag and tipped it into her palm.
There was her wedding ring, her mother's pearls, two gold bracelets and a watch I had given her on our fifth anniversary.
Beside them lay a folded paper.
"This is a statement for the bank," she said.
"It says I never signed Dean's credit line, and I used your power of attorney without asking you."
"It has my name and today's date on it."
