Chapter 24: The Yard Opens
The Buick turned onto Allens Avenue at dusk with the last of the wedding still on us.
Rice in my collar, lipstick on my jaw, her white jacket tossed across the back seat.
"Stop here," Rosalia said.
I stopped in front of the gate.
The Harbor Point sign was gone.
The padlock was gone.
Over the bay doors, in fresh white paint on a clean board, someone had lettered FIORENTINO MARINE AND AUTO.
The brass plate from my father's rented shop hung on the office door, polished so bright it threw the headlight back at me.
Every bulb in the yard was lit.
"They did this this morning," she said. "While you were being tied into your tie."
"They told me they were at the bar."
"They lied to you for love. It's allowed."
I got out and walked across the gravel I had swept for eleven years.
It smelled of new paint and old oil.
The big bay door on the left was shut, the one my father had hung himself.
I put both hands on the chain and pulled.
It rolled up with the same groan it had always made, and the light came spilling out onto the gravel.
