Chapter 7: Farmers Market

Saturday morning, I walked into the farmers market on Ashton's arm, and I saw Trent buying a muffin.

He was ten feet away.

He wore a quarter-zip and a smile.

The same ridiculous sunglasses sat on top of his head as in every photo he had ever posted.

Three of his rowing friends stood around him holding iced coffees.

I knew two of them from the group chat.

I knew exactly which ones had sent skulls.

"Don't," Ashton said quietly.

"Don't what?"

"Don't let him get a free swing."

"I'm not going to."

"I'm right here."

"I know," I said. "Hold my peaches."

I put the paper bag in his big hand and walked over.

Trent saw me coming and his face lit up in a way I had once found charming.

"Sadie! Hey. Babe. I've been texting you."

"I blocked you."

"I know, that's why I'm here. We should talk."

"We're talking."

One of the rowers snorted into his coffee.

Trent glanced at him, then back at me, and dropped his voice to a pleading murmur.

"Come on. Not in front of people."

"You had plenty of people when it was about me."

His smile went stiff.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"A dozen people, Trent. I counted."

The two rowers looked at each other.
