Chapter 8: Hold Still

I answered the call in the truck, red-faced, with my dress pulled down.

Keeva had six minutes before a bed alarm.

She used them to demand a real call that night, on a couch, with wine.

Ashton said absolutely not.

I said it was downstairs.

So at eight o'clock I was on his couch with a blanket across my lap and my laptop on the coffee table.

I wore his old gray T-shirt and nothing else.

The shirt came down to my thighs.

Ashton knelt on the rug in front of me with his hands flat on his own knees.

"If she hears you," he said, "I'm moving to Alaska."

"She won't hear me."

"If you make a noise, I stop."

"If you stop, I'll tell her you're under here."

His eyes closed.

"You are evil."

"You said that already."

The laptop chimed.

Keeva's face popped up, in her scrubs, in a kitchen I didn't recognize, with a wineglass in one hand.

I smiled.

I pulled the blanket up over his head.

He went under it without another sound, and I felt his hands settle on my knees and push them gently apart.

"Hey, you," Keeva said. "Look at you, you look so pretty. Did you get sun?"

"A little."

"How's the bakery? Are you still sad about Trent?"

"No," I said. "I told him off at the farmers market. Today. In front of everybody."

His breath touched the inside of my thigh.

I kept my eyes on the camera and my face in a polite smile.

"Shut up. Did you?"

"I did."

"What did you say?"

His mouth landed on my skin under the blanket.

It was a slow, wet kiss, high on the inside of my left thigh, and I felt the scrape of his beard.

"I said," I began, and my voice came out too high. I cleared my throat. "I said the problem was him."
