Chapter 13: The Clans Kneel
Down on the cliff road, the front rank of Lowmarch pikemen heard the horns and stopped walking.
Then the ridges moved.
Riders poured over every crest around Stonefast, in furs and leather, with wolf banners snapping over their heads.
There were more of them than Marit had ever imagined.
They came down the slopes at a slow, steady canter, and the ground hummed under the wall.
"Open the gate," she said.
Torren turned his head.
"Marit."
"Open it. I will not be crowned behind a wall."
He looked at her for one breath, and a grin pulled at the scar in his eyebrow.
"Open the gate!" he shouted.
They rode out together, she on a gray mare with the iron crown on her head.
Torren rode the black horse at her left hand, and the Red Ridge chief rode behind them.
The clans closed around them from both sides.
Nobody gave an order.
The nearest rider reined in, swung down from his saddle and knelt in the wet grass.
The man beside him did the same.
Then the whole line did, rank after rank, a long wave of kneeling men rolling out across the valley.
Horses blew.
Banners dipped.
Marit rode through the silence at a walk, and her hands on the reins were steady.
She stopped a hundred paces from the Lowmarch pikes.
Edric was shouting.
She could hear him from there, his voice cracking with rage, calling the charge again and again.
Nobody moved.
The soldiers in the front rank were the same men she had spoken to at the ford.
