Chapter 17: A Queen in Aldermere

Aldermere opened its gates for her on the fourth morning.

Nobody had to be asked.

The guards stood back from the gate arch and let fifty Wildlands riders in iron and wolf fur clatter through at a trot.

Marit rode at the front on the gray mare with the crown on her head.

Her sister rode at her side, small and straight, with a leather satchel over her shoulder.

She had not complained once on the road.

She had only asked, every night, whether Torren was still alive, and Marit had sent a rider back to find out.

Every night the answer had been the same.

Barely.

"It looks smaller," Odile said, looking up at the white walls and the green roofs.

"It looks the same."

"You hated it."

"I did."

The cobbled avenue to the palace was lined with townsfolk.

They stood shoulder to shoulder in their market aprons and their workday coats, and nobody cheered.
