Chapter 7: The Lobby Walk

Gregory picked up the phone on the fourth ring and put it on speaker.

"Colin."

"Is she with you?"

Colin's voice was thick and slurred, and a bar was clattering behind it.

"I've got a guy at your building who says she went up. Tell me she isn't there."

"Go home, Colin."

"She's my wife!"

"She's your wife for sixteen more days," Gregory said calmly. "Go home and sleep, and don't call this number again tonight."

He hung up.

I lay against his chest in the dark, listening to his heart.

"A guy at your building," I said.

"Colin pays my night doorman fifty dollars to text him who comes and goes."

His hand moved slowly down my spine.

"The doorman is fired as of this morning."

"Colin is having me followed. He's having you followed."

"Yes."

"You don't seem worried."

"I'm not worried about Colin," Gregory said. "I'm worried about you."

I didn't answer.

I fell asleep with his arm around me and slept better than I had in months.

At six forty-five, Gregory made me coffee in a kitchen as big as my whole apartment.

He wore a white shirt, open at the collar.

He moved around the stove.

"Eggs?"

"I have a shift at seven."

"Then toast."

"You know this was a one-time thing," I said, from the stool, wearing his shirt over yesterday's jeans.

"I heard you say it three times last night."

"I said it once. You made me say 'yes' the other three."

He smiled into the coffee machine.

"Tonight," he said.

"Stop saying that."

"I'll stop when you stop saying one-time."

I was still arguing with him when we took the elevator down.

The Harbor Point lobby had white marble floors and a desk with a very nervous young doorman.
