Chapter 13: The Second Try

Rocco's POV

Cami walked back into her father's house without a word.

She did not slam the door.

She closed it softly, and I knew I had lost the night.

I stood on the dark porch with the burned filter of a cigarette under my shoe.

I had planned to tell her at breakfast, with coffee and daylight and a door she could leave through.

I had not planned for her to ask me why I looked at her sister.

I had been carrying the answer since the morning I woke up.

That morning I opened my eyes in my own bed on Long Island, before dawn, with the smell of lilies in my nose.

The lilies had been on Livia's coffin.

I sat up and looked at my hands, and they were warm, and the date on my phone was the day before the weddings.

I did not believe it.

I went into the bathroom and put my fist through the mirror to see if I would wake up.

I bled, and I did not wake up, and I understood that someone had given me a second try.

By seven I was in my study with my lawyer on speaker and the Brandolini contract open on the desk.

The contract named a Brandolini daughter and left a blank line for her name.

"Write in the younger one," my lawyer said. "That's what both families agreed."

"Leave it blank."

"Mr. Ferrante, a blank line on a contract like this is..."

"Leave it blank. Whoever walks into this house signs it."

"And if nobody comes?"

"Then I was wrong about something."

I did not know she would come.

I knew only that in the last life Livia had come, and Livia had died, and the one person who had stood at the grave and told me the truth was her sister.
