Chapter 15: Her Locket

We took the study in my father's house and locked the door.

My father stood by the window with his cane across his knees and his face gray.

My mother sat on the sofa with both hands over her mouth.

Elliot sat on the arm of a chair with the cracked phone in his hands and did not look at any of us.

Rocco's captain stood against the door.

Nobody spoke until Rocco's phone rang on the desk.

The screen said *Unknown*.

Rocco put it on speaker and set it down between us.

"Don Ferrante." The voice was old, dry and pleasant. "I hope your dinner was good."

"Where is she?"

"Comfortable. She is a very polite girl. She asked for her husband before she asked for water."

Elliot made a small sound in his throat.

Rocco's jaw moved.

"What do you want?"

"What I wrote on the card. The Florida port lease, signed over to my family, by midnight tomorrow."

"The lease needs two signatures," Rocco said. "Mine and a Brandolini's."

"I know what it needs. That is why I want the Brandolini who has a spine." The voice paused. "The elder one. Is she there?"

I leaned over the phone.

"I'm here."

"Mrs. Ferrante. We have never met. You have cost me a great deal this year."

"You blew up my building."

"A man of mine did. He was careless, and he is in a cellar now, so we are even."

"Let her go and I'll sign whatever you want."

"No, no. You will sign at midnight tomorrow, in front of me, with your sister sitting beside you. Come alone. If I see one Ferrante car within a mile of the river, your sister goes home in two boxes. The ears first."
