Chapter 24: Open Doors
We opened the east wing on Wednesday morning, with the sun coming flat down the corridor.
Cesare stood beside me and did not take the key from my hand.
"You do it," he said.
It turned easily in the new lock.
The door swung back on a sitting room full of light, because the housekeeper had gone in at dawn and drawn every curtain.
She stood by the window now, with her apron twisted in her hands.
"I couldn't do it before," she said. "I'm sorry. I dusted around the flowers for three years."
"Take them," said Cesare gently.
She lifted the vase of brown stems off the table and carried it out.
The room smelled of jasmine and warm dust.
I had thought it would feel like a tomb.
It felt like a room that had been waiting to be used.
We worked for an hour.
Cesare lifted the framed photographs off the dresser, one by one, and did not look at them for long.
I folded sweaters.
Neither of us said much.
Once, I came out of the closet with a silk scarf in my hands, pale yellow, and found him standing at the window with his back to me.
