Chapter 20: The Statement Read Aloud
Jonas let go of my back.
I felt him do it, and I felt the cold where his hand had been.
He walked down the center aisle between the round tables, alone, with three hundred people watching him go.
He was tall and scarred and calm in his black tuxedo, and the room parted for him.
He climbed the steps to the stage and held out his hand to Dale.
"I'll take that," he said.
Dale stood frozen with the microphone in his fist.
The deputy from the gate stood at the edge of the stage in a dress uniform I had not noticed.
He looked at Dale until Dale gave it up.
Jonas turned to the ballroom.
"Good evening," he said, and his voice came out level and quiet through the speakers.
"Most of you know me as the man who drove drunk on River Road."
"I was not driving, and I spent seven years blaming the one person who pulled me out."
I put my fist against my mouth.
