Chapter 23: Wedding Night, Again
It was nearly three in the morning when we got back to the penthouse.
The elevator doors closed, and Glenn leaned against the glass wall of the car and looked at me.
I still wore the black dress, and the new ring was heavy on my hand.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"What you've been wanting to say since the stage."
"Mrs. Wexler."
"I'm keeping Marrin at work."
"Mrs. Marrin-Wexler."
"Better."
He crossed the car in a step and kissed me against the mirrored wall.
It was a slow, deep, patient kiss, with nothing behind it that he needed to keep from me.
I felt it all the way down.
The doors opened on his front hall, and we did not bother with the lamp.
The city lay lit up behind the glass, orange and white, with the river a black stripe through the middle.
He turned me by the shoulders to face the window.
"I've been looking at you all night," he said against my ear. "I thought about this zipper through three courses."
"You thought about my zipper during the speeches."
"Yours was the best speech."
He drew the zipper down, one slow inch at a time, and kissed each bone of my spine as it appeared.
