Chapter 4: The Nape of My Neck
I caught Finn alone in the parking garage while Maia checked us out.
He was loading our gift boxes into the trunk of his truck.
"Dalton Rhodes says to ask you where we were the night before the first wedding," I said.
Finn set down a box of candlesticks.
"Dalton Rhodes says a lot of things. He's a guy who called a woman a trophy at a funeral."
"Where were we?"
"The bachelor dinner. Eleven guys, a steakhouse on Wells, you had two whiskeys and gave a toast about how you'd never need a second chance." He shrugged. "Then I drove you home."
"And the blocking?"
"Wes." He wiped his hands on his jeans and looked straight at me. "She sent ninety messages a day for the first week. You were in a hospital bed holding your head. I blocked her number because I'm your friend, and I'd do it again."
"She says I should have heard them."
"You should have heard what, exactly? How much she missed you? From the woman who ran off with her ex in a getaway car?"
It sounded reasonable.
It sounded exactly like Finn.
"I just wanted to ask," I said.
"Ask me anything. I've got nothing to hide." He grinned and clapped my shoulder. "Everything's handled. Go enjoy your honeymoon."
I went back upstairs and told myself I felt better.
That night Maia and I were home in our small apartment with a takeout carton of noodles between us on the couch.
The headache arrived around nine.
It always came as a thumb pressed behind my left eye.
