Chapter 4: No Dinner Tonight

"Then get out," Margot said.

She said it quietly, with every phone in the room pointed at her.

"I was already leaving," I said.

I walked out through the crowd with the watch on my wrist and Millie one step behind me.

Behind us, Brody called, "Bye, Nolan! Hope you feel better!"

Millie didn't turn around.

"I'm going to key his car," she said in the truck. "Not today. But I'm going to."

"Drive."

The next morning I stood at my sister's stove in a T-shirt that smelled like her laundry soap and cooked four eggs.

It was the first time in three years I had cooked for no one.

It was a strange, loose feeling.

Millie ate standing up, with her work boots already on.

"You slept," she said. "I checked twice. You slept like a man who got out of jail."

"I did get out of jail."

"I'm just saying I'm glad."

The doorbell rang at eight.

Millie looked at me, and I looked at the door.

Margot stood on the landing in sunglasses and her good coat, with no driver and no Brody.

She took the sunglasses off in the doorway.

Her face had gone the colour of old paper, and the skin around her mouth had a grey tint that I did not like at all.

"We have to talk," she said.

"Come in," I said.

"Brody posted the video. It has four million views. The sponsors have all emailed, every one of them, and one of them wants a statement."

"A statement from who?"

"From you." She sat on the edge of Millie's sofa. "You need to say it was a misunderstanding. That you were upset about the divorce and you regret it. Then you apologize to Brody on camera, and it's over."

Millie coughed into her hand.

I sat down in the armchair across from my wife.

"I'm not going to do that," I said.

"Nolan."

"He had my father's watch on, Margot, on a live stream, and he knew whose it was."
