Chapter 7: Eyes Open

I gave him ten minutes, and then I put on my coat and went out onto the porch.

He didn't turn around.

"You said ask you tomorrow," I said.

"I did."

"It's past midnight. It is tomorrow."

I heard him breathe out through his nose, almost a laugh.

"Zelda."

"I'm not angry anymore."

"You were forty minutes ago."

"I'm tired of being angry. It's boring, and it doesn't keep me warm."

I stepped up beside him at the rail.

The lake was black and the snow was blue.

He kept his eyes on it.

"I'm going to touch you," I said. "I'm saying it out loud. I'm awake. Look at me."

He turned his head.

I took hold of the front of his flannel shirt with my good hand and pulled until he bent down.

"Eyes open," I said.

"They're open."

I kissed him.

He made a low sound in his chest and went completely still.

I kissed him again, harder, until his hand came up and cupped my jaw.

His palm was huge and rough and shaking.

"Ask me what I want," he said against my mouth.

"What do you want?"

"You. In a bed. Awake. Telling me what to do."

"Good," I said. "Because I'm in charge."

He laughed, a short hard breath, and picked me up off the porch.

The back bedroom had a woodstove, a bed with a green quilt, and a window that looked at the trees.

He set me down on the edge of the mattress and stood in front of me.

I undid his belt.

"Take it off," he said, his voice rough.

"David."

"Don't stop now."

"I'm not stopping." I pulled the belt through the loops and dropped it. "Take your shirt off."

He did.

He was broad and heavy through the chest, with dark hair across it.

A long white scar ran down his ribs.

I put my hands flat on him.

His skin was hot.

He closed his eyes.

"Open them," I said.

He opened them.

I took off my own sweater and then my shirt, slowly.

I watched his face while I did it.

His hands curled into fists to keep from reaching.
