Chapter 12: The Book

The clubhouse was full when Talon and I came in with sawdust still in my hair.

Nobody looked at us.

Everybody was looking at the letter in Dane's hand.

"It came by courier an hour ago," he said. "It's from a lawyer in Pittsburgh."

He did not read it aloud.

He passed it to the sergeant at arms.

The sergeant read it with his lips moving, then set it down on the bar very gently.

"Two hundred and forty thousand dollars," he said. "Due in full in thirty days, or the note on the Ridge is forfeit."

A low sound went around the room.

"That's the whole balance," June said. "He can't just call it. There's a schedule."

"There's a clause," Dane said. "Our father signed it in nineteen ninety-eight."

"What clause?"

"Kingswood can call it on thirty days' notice if the borrower breaches the peace."

Dane rubbed his face.

"Terrence's lawyer says the brick was us. He says we threatened him in the yard in front of a deputy."

"That was him!" Wick shouted. "He threw the brick!"

"I know."

"We have the video of him!"

"I know, Wick. It doesn't matter what's true. It matters what he can sign."

The sergeant at arms looked at me.

It was a quick, careful look, and I felt every man in the room think the same thing.

This had started when I got to the gate.

"Don't," Talon said, to the room, very quietly.

"Nobody said anything," the sergeant said.

"I could hear you."

I put my hand on Talon's arm.

"It's all right. They're right."
