Chapter 20: The Second Van

The sergeant at arms drove to the county jail with the lawyer to post my brother's bail.

I did not go.

I sat in Talon's truck at the end of the Ridge road, with his bandaged hands on the wheel, and told him what I knew.

"Wick said a white van with no writing and a dented ladder."

"Terrence's van has his name on it."

"The company van does. His father's old work van doesn't." I turned in the seat. "It sits in a barn off the quarry road. He took it to the county line every first Friday so nobody would see the company name there."

"You never told Dane."

"Not until the ledger. I thought the county line was a bar tab. I followed him once, in the second year. I turned around at the gate."

Talon looked at me for a moment.

Then he started the truck.

The barn stood at the end of a gravel road, behind a chain-link fence, with a rusted padlock on the door.

The rain started as we got there.

It came down in sheets across the windshield, and the wind pushed the truck on its springs.

Talon cut the padlock with a bolt cutter from the toolbox.

He did it with his bandaged hands, slowly, and he did not complain.

Inside there was a smell of old oil and gasoline.

In the beam of his flashlight stood a white van with a ladder rack on the roof.

One rung was bent.

I put my hand on the hood.

It was still faintly warm.

"He was here tonight," I said.

"Look."

On the workbench along the back wall sat three red plastic gas cans, empty, in a row.

Next to them lay a fat black marker and a stencil cut from cardboard.

I held the flashlight up to the stencil.

It spelled BLACK RIDGE in block letters.

"He stenciled them," I said. "He stenciled it here and put the can behind the bar."
