Chapter 21: The Yard

Sean's POV

Kingswood Roofing kept its yard behind a chain-link fence on the east side of town.

Stacks of shingles stood under blue tarps.

Two white vans with the company name on the door sat nose to tail by the office trailer.

I parked in the gravel at seven in the morning and left the engine running.

I took out my phone and called Alexis, and put it back in my shirt pocket with the screen against my chest.

She answered on the first ring.

She did not say anything, and I did not either.

I had left her a note in the cabin telling her where to be.

June had driven out to get her, and the lawyer was in the car with them, with the speaker turned up and a recorder on the seat.

I walked across the yard.

Terrence came out of the trailer with a coffee mug.

He stopped at the sight of me, and his face did a series of quick things before it settled.

"Well," he said. "Look who's out of bed."

"Morning, Terrence."

"I'd heard you were a hero. Pulled a boy out of a fire."

"You'd heard."

"I hear everything."

"Dane's out on bail," I said. "He'll be fine."

"I'm sure."

"He didn't set that fire."

"That's for the court to say."

I walked a little closer.

I kept my hands loose and visible, and the burned skin on my arms pulled when I moved them.

"I'm not here to fight you," I said. "I'm here to ask what you want."

Terrence laughed.

"What I want."

"Everything's gone against you. The note's paid. The town knows. She's got a judge. You can still walk away, and I'll tell Dane to let it lie."

"You'd tell Dane."

"I would."
