Chapter 22: Founders' Day
Alexis's POV
Founders' Day in Marrow Creek happened on the last Saturday of October, on the square, with a high school band and a bandstand hung with orange bunting.
Every year the town council gave out a plaque to a Citizen of the Year.
This year, according to the banner over the stage, it was Councilman Terrence Kingswood.
I stood at the back of the crowd with June and the lawyer from over the hardware store.
Behind us, along the curb, the Black Ridge Warriors had parked their bikes in a row.
Twelve men and a gangly boy with a bandaged hand stood next to them, in clean leather, with their arms folded.
They did not say a word.
They did not need to.
The whole square knew who they were, and the whole square knew what had happened Monday night, and a hum of whispering ran through it.
"Where is he?" I said.
"Coming," June said. "The judge signed his release at nine. The deputy didn't show up to fight it."
"The deputy's on the stage."
"I know, honey."
He stood to the left of the podium in his dress uniform, stiff and sweating.
Terrence stood at the podium in a gray suit.
His nose had mended crooked.
He raised both hands, smiling, and the crowd gave him a warm and slightly uneasy round of applause.
"Thank you," he said. "Thank you, friends. It's been a hard month for this town."
"He's going to give a speech," June whispered.
"Let him."
"Marrow Creek is a place that looks after its own," Terrence said. "We've had some troubles lately. Some people brought them here from outside. But we stand together."
Beside me, my hand had found the strap of my bag.
Inside it, wrapped in a dish towel, was June's phone.
