Chapter 23: The Lot

He waited until the party was at its loudest, when nobody would miss us.

The Ridge was loud that night with people toasting and singing and breaking things in the clubhouse, and he took me out of it by the hand.

We crossed the yard to the shop.

He did not turn on the overhead light.

He turned on the one small lamp over the bench, and he sat down on a wooden shop chair with his burned forearms on his knees.

"Ask me anything," he said.

"You said you had something to tell me."

"Yes."

"Then tell it."

He looked at the floor.

"The third year," he said. "March. A first Friday."

I went cold.

"I told myself I was driving to the lumber yard in Millhaven. I took the long way, through Alder Street. I parked at the corner by the church. I didn't mean to stop."

"Sean."

It was the first time I had said his real name out loud since the day I got there.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

"You came out to the mailbox," he said. "In a long-sleeved shirt, in March, with the sun out. You reached up to the box and the sleeve slid down."

I knew what he had seen.

I remembered that day.

I remembered the sleeve.

"There was a mark on your wrist," he said. "A hand. Four fingers and a thumb, purple, the size of a grown man's."

"I remember."

"You looked up the street. You looked straight at my truck."

"I thought it was a stranger's."

"You didn't wave. You pulled your sleeve down. You went inside, and I sat there for twenty minutes with my hand on the key."

"And then?"

"And then I drove away."

The lamp hummed.

"I told Dane it was nothing. I told myself the same, and I couldn't make it stick, and I did nothing for two more years." His voice broke. "That's the last thing. I saw it. I saw it with my own eyes, and I drove away."
