Chapter 5: Plain Sight

June did not lose her job by Monday.

She drove in at seven on Monday morning in clean scrubs, with her phone in her back pocket.

I rode beside her in the passenger seat.

"I'm going to give you the short version," she said as we parked. "Terrence called my manager three times. My manager has known me eleven years. She told him to go to hell and then she called me to ask if I was okay."

"That's good."

"It's great. But he's going to keep trying, and you need paper before he does."

So I got paper.

The clinic at the end of June's hospital wing took photographs of everything.

My brow, my lip, my wrist, and the plum-colored hand on my upper arm that I hadn't known was there.

The doctor asked me questions in a quiet voice and wrote down every answer.

At the end she said, "I'd like to put in my report that these injuries are consistent with being struck and grabbed. Is that all right with you?"

"Yes."

"Do you want to file a police report?"

My mouth went dry.

"His friend is a deputy."

"Then we file with the state police," June said from the doorway. "I know a woman."

The woman June knew was a lawyer with an office over a hardware store in town.

She was sixty, and she wore reading glasses on a chain.

"I did your brother's divorce from a very bad first wife," she said, shaking my hand. "He paid me in free oil changes for eleven years. I owe your club more than it owes me."

"How long will this take?"

"A protection order, emergency hearing, a week. A divorce, as long as he drags it." She slid a form across the desk. "Mrs. Kingswood, I need you to tell me everything."
