Chapter 14: Sean's Offer
I got in, because I wanted to hear what he'd say.
Sean drove two minutes to the gravel lot behind the athletic field and cut the engine.
Beyond the windshield, the dark lake lay flat as slate.
"Okay," I said. "Take me somewhere."
"My uncle has a cabin in Vermont," he said. "Two hours north. It has a wood stove and no cell signal."
"I have the keys, a full tank, and a bag in the back."
"We could leave right now."
I looked at the duffel behind the seat.
It was a real bag, packed with real care, with a sweater of mine folded on top.
"That's my sweater," I said.
"You left it in my truck on Saturday. I washed it."
I almost laughed, and it made my throat ache.
"Say the rest of the plan."
"If you're gone before Friday, the chair has nothing to hold. No hearing. No bus. I've already called a friend in admissions at a college in Boston."
