Chapter 20: Christmas
The window rolled back up.
The red car backed out across the gravel and was gone.
Jesse stood in the doorway until the sound of it faded.
"He wants you there," he said, "so you see him win."
"Then I'll see you win instead."
He turned around and looked at me.
"You believe that?"
"I believe you know the loop better than he does."
He almost smiled.
Then he went back to work, and I went back up the ladder.
Christmas was eleven days later.
I'd planned to stay in the dorm.
Mrs. Rainey called me herself, on my phone, the week before.
"You're coming," she said. "Ruby already wrote your name on a stocking. In glitter. It doesn't come off."
So I came.
The little white house had a tree in the corner that leaned worse than Bea's birthday cake.
Ruby had decorated it with soccer medals and candy canes and every ornament she'd ever made in school.
A paper plate angel sat on the top with my drawing of her face glued over its face.
"It's you as an angel," I said.
