Chapter 30: The New Barn

I stood very still in the hospital corridor with three coffees.

"Go on, then," Grandpa said.

"I'd like to marry your granddaughter," Caspian said. "Not now. When she wants to. If she wants to. But I'd like you to know I asked you first."

There was a long pause.

"You'll muck pens," Grandpa said. "Every holiday. For the rest of your life."

"Yes, sir."

"You'll learn hay."

"I'm getting better at hay."

"You're not."

"No, sir."

Grandpa sighed, a big one.

"Don't ask me, son. Ask her. She's standing in the hall."

I nearly dropped the tray.

Caspian didn't turn around.

"I know," he said. "I can feel her from here. She's trying very hard not to breathe."

I came in with my face on fire and put the coffees down.

Nobody said a word.

The old King looked out of the window, smiling into his beard.

Caspian drank his black coffee and didn't ask me anything at all.

Not that day.
