Chapter 6: The Regent's Deal
"Destroyed," I said. "Grandpa, read me who signed it."
"Raife Ardane. Chair of the Council of Sanctuaries."
The wind went out of me.
"There are eleven wolves in those pens," I said.
"I know how many wolves there are, Sal. I feed them."
"They're people."
"I know that too."
He went quiet.
Then he said, "Don't you go doing anything foolish up there."
"I won't."
"You said that when you were six and climbed in with the Grey."
"I was eighteen when I climbed in with the Grey."
"Felt like six."
I laughed, and it came out as a sob.
"I'll fix it," I said.
"You'll study," he said. "That's your job. Mine's the farm."
He hung up before I could argue.
I stood on the infirmary path with the phone in my hand until the bell rang.
The Regent's council dined at Greyling that night.
The great hall was dressed in white linen and candles.
The heirs of every pack in the east sat in their best blazers along the long tables.
The council sat at the High Table under the new window.
Raife Ardane sat in the middle of them, in the King's chair.
The King's chair was empty, and the King wasn't there.
He hadn't come back to the tower all day.
I sat at the end of a student table between Annis and the tall redhead from combat class.
Nobody had told me not to come.
The soup came.
Raife stood and tapped his glass, and the hall went silent.
He spoke for ten minutes about tradition and the Blood Moon and the honor of the packs.
He didn't mention the human in the room once.
Then he said, "And this autumn the council has begun the long-overdue work of tidying our sanctuaries. Some old arrangements have outlived their kindness."
A few heads nodded.
I put my spoon down.
Annis grabbed my wrist under the table.
