Chapter 7: The Hunter's Run
"You're not my rent," I said. "You're my job. There's a difference."
"Is there?"
"Do you hear yourself?"
"Do you hear you? You've been gone all day. You broke rule one. You walked past me in a corridor like I was a coat rack. And now you want to be hurt that I made a deal without you?"
He came back down two steps, so we were eye to eye.
"He's using you to own me."
"I know."
"And you shook his hand anyway."
"Because he'll kill them anyway. At least this way they've got a chance." My voice cracked. "What was I supposed to do? Ask you? You'd have said no."
"I'd have said no," he agreed.
"See?"
"Because it's my uncle and my crown and my problem, not your grandfather's."
"Well, now it's both."
We stood there breathing hard at each other in the dark.
His eyes kept flicking silver and back.
"Go to bed, Coldwell," he said finally.
"Say please."
He went up the stairs without a word.
He didn't come to breakfast the next day, or the day after.
On the third night was the Hunter's Run.
On the first frost, the seniors shift and hunt the new students through the forest between the chapel and the lake.
Every new student carries a red ribbon.
If you get to the boathouse with your ribbon, you've earned your place.
If a senior takes it, you buy their drinks all year.
Nobody gets hurt, everyone told me.
The King wasn't allowed to run.
The Dean had said so at breakfast, in front of everybody, and Caspian had gone grey around the mouth and walked out.
I wasn't on the list either.
Until the list went up on the chapel door at dinner, in Araminta's neat head girl handwriting.
Coldwell, S. was at the bottom.
