Chapter 18: North Shore
The wolf turned his head toward the woods on the uphill side of the road.
Then he looked back at me.
"He wants you to follow him," my partner said. "Tell me he doesn't want you to follow him."
"He wants me to follow him."
I grabbed the jump bag, the burn kit and two blankets.
"Back the rig up to the point and wait," I said. "Lights on. Radio on. When you see people, you drive."
"And if I see fire?"
"Drive faster."
The wolf came out of the burning road and met me at the ditch.
He went up a slope that had already burned, black and smoking, the trunks charred and the ground gray with ash.
Fire doesn't go back where it's been.
I followed him into the black.
It was hot through the soles of my boots.
He kept stopping to wait for me, looking back with his silver eyes.
Every time I caught up, he pushed his nose into my palm, and the silver flashed.
We crossed the slope above the burning road in ten minutes.
On the far side, he turned downhill into a gully full of wet rock and ferns that hadn't caught yet.
