The silence lasted.
Then three hundred people started talking at once.
Chairs scraped, a woman said "Madonna" near the swan, and somewhere a man laughed in shock and was hushed.
I stood on the stage and looked at my husband.
Carmine did not look at the room.
He had said it to three hundred people, and he was still only looking at me.
Nico lifted the microphone, and nobody tried to stop him.
"Eleven minutes," he said, warm and sorrowful, so that every table could hear. "That is all that separates us."
"He came first, so he got the chair, the name and the wife."
"I came second, so I got the hotel and the books, and a smile to hand out."
"Tonight I only handed out the truth."
I could not hear the rest of it.
I was hearing the stairwell, and Carmine had called my name, begging.
