Friday morning the Table sat again, and this time every chair was full.
Sergio's was filled with something that had once been a Don.
He had come in on his driver's arm, in a black suit gone loose at the shoulders.
The oxygen line ran under his collar where everyone could see it.
He did not look at his sons.
Carmine stood at the wall beside me, his eye still purple, his hands folded.
He wore no ring on the left hand but the gold band.
I noticed he had not taken that off either.
"I have something to say," said Sergio, and the room went quiet.
He kept his hand flat on the green felt.
"On the tenth of October, 2021, my second son told me what he had done. I knew who lay in that bed."
"I told the Family a lie, so that I would keep both my sons."
"That is all I will say about it."
He did not say the word sorry, and nobody in that room expected him to.
