Chapter 23: Lucia
We went to Queen of Heaven on Sunday morning, before the dinner, with Inga in the back seat holding a pot of yellow mums.
The cedar tree had lost most of its brown needles to the wind.
The stone stood where it had stood for three weeks, gray and plain.
LUCIA COLLEEN VALENTI.
I had not yet come to it in daylight with nobody watching.
Carmine got out first and opened my door, and I took his hand.
I wore the ring on my left hand, and I had not taken it off.
Inga set the mums at the foot of the stone, and then she stepped back and blew her nose.
"I'll be at the car," she said. "Don't mind me. I'm weeping about the weather."
She went down the path with her braid over one shoulder.
I knelt on the grass.
It was cold and wet, and I did not care.
"Hi, baby," I said.
In my coat pocket was a small clear plastic band, curled with age.
