Chapter 26: The Breakwater
The offer from Connecticut lapsed on the first of February.
Neither of us had signed anything.
Nobody said anything about it, and the realtor stopped calling.
The COMING SOON sign leaned further over in the drift at the end of Ash Point Road.
On the first Saturday in February I texted him at four thirty in the morning.
I wrote: Breakwater. Six thirty. Please.
I stared at it for ten minutes before I sent it.
He wrote back at once.
He wrote: OK.
The Rockland Breakwater runs nearly a mile out into the bay, a long straight road of granite blocks, with the lighthouse at the very end.
In summer it's full of tourists with ice cream.
In February it is the loneliest place in Maine.
I parked at the foot of it in the dark and walked out in my heavy coat and wool hat, with the wind coming off the water like a fist.
It was four degrees.
The blocks were slick with frozen spray, and the bay was black on both sides, steaming where the air hit it.
